The clean energy sector in New Zealand is gaining momentum as more consumers and businesses invest in portable power and electric transport. Recent figures from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) show a steady increase in demand for off-grid power systems and e-bikes over the past year.
According to MBIE’s Energy in New Zealand 2024 report, sales of small-scale battery systems, including portable power stations, grew by over 20% in 2023 compared to the previous year. Industry analysts point to factors such as extreme weather events, increased outdoor recreation, and rising electricity costs as key drivers.
At the same time, electric bikes continue to gain traction. A January 2024 article from Stuff.co.nz highlighted how e-bike imports reached record highs, with over 90,000 units brought into the country last year. This trend is expected to accelerate as more Kiwis look for sustainable commuting options and adventure vehicles.
Brands such as Bluetti and Sur-Ron are benefiting from this shift, with retailers reporting strong interest in high-capacity power stations and lightweight electric dirt bikes. For example, Bluetti launched its AC240 solar generator in early 2024, offering improved waterproofing and faster charging. Meanwhile, Sur-Ron has announced plans to expand its dealer network in Australasia, aiming to make performance electric bikes more accessible to both recreational riders and businesses.
The combination of technological innovation and growing environmental awareness is creating new opportunities for distributors and retailers across New Zealand. As the sector evolves, customers can expect a wider range of reliable, sustainable energy solutions to support work, travel, and recreation.
